Salary study for directors of communication,
by Nan Ross, May, 1997

Nan Ross, then director of communication for the Diocese of Arizona, conducted a survey update "to determine for my own diocese and for Episcopal Communicators what the salary range is for directors of communication in Episcopal Dioceses." Her report:

  • The survey was conducted in the fall of 1996.
  • It was limited to full-time communication professionals in the Episcopal Church
  • 24 surveys were mailed; 17 responses received*
  • Annual salary range for 1996: $27,600 to $55,000
  • Average salary: $40,718
  • Median salary:  $40,500
  • Pension contributions range: 5% to 18%
  • Annual remuneration review: 8 of 14
  • Performance review: 5 of 14
  •  Diocesan automobile: 1 of 14

Ross notes: "It appears that the highest salaries were paid to those positions that had periodic remuneration and performance reviews."

*Three surveys arrived much later than the deadline; Ross included the salary amounts but not answers to the other questions on the survey.
