WRITING

Submission requirements: Digital submissions in Word or PDF format, NOT the published version. Include the headline of the article, the publication date and category name and number. All entries are anonymous (no photos, headshots, bylines, URLs or other identifying information. This levels the playing field and awards quality writing, regardless of the circulation or whether it appears in a  church newsletter or a national publication).

 

8.Feature 

Criteria: effective development of idea, writing style, originality and impact; a non-fiction piece

9. News (single story, sidebars and breakouts) 

Criteria: timeliness, significance, clarity and economy of expression, thoroughness, objectivity/fairness

10. Humor 

Criteria: wit, originality, phrasing, impact, effectiveness of humor for publication’s audience

11. Interview (Q&A or profile style)

Criteria: relevance, captures the person’s essence, uniqueness of the interviewee (or experience), sequence of questions (flow of article)

12. Editorial/Commentary for print or Internet

Criteria: timeliness of issue, breadth of appeal for audience, clarity, cogency of arguments, writing style

13. Theological Reflection or Devotional/Inspiration Writing (disciplined discussion of scripture, doctrine, or tradition or exploration of the experience of the holy in contemporary life) for print or Internet

Criteria: persuasiveness of presentation, quality of writing, clarity, originality of premise

14. Promotional Copy (marketing letter, brochure text absent layout, fundraising appeal, annual campaign)

Criteria: persuasiveness of presentation, quality of writing, ability to engage readers
